ABHI [ ACTION FOR BARRIER FREE HANDICAPPED INTEGRATION]

Established in 2004 in Shimla(HP) by a group pf professionals in the field of special education, ABHI is a non-profit NGO which works with children afflicted with severe mental/ physical disabilities. Its objective is to work towards the social and functional integration of these children into a society which almost appears to have forgotten them. An important goal is to train the parents to care for their children and not to give up on them. It does so through a multi-dimensional programme: counselling their parents who are invariably from the disadvantaged strata of society; providing functional education, physiotherapy and vocational skilling to the children, regular health check-ups, speech therapy and mid-day meals. Everything is provided free of cost, including two full-time ambulances to pick up and drop the children. ABHI has a staff component of two special education teachers, a physiotherapist, two vocational instructors, two drivers and helpers. It works closely with other NGOs, the Rotary and Inner Wheel clubs and the Art of Living. It also has an ever growing list of volunteers and consulting professionals. ABHI is registered under the HP Societies Registration Act, with the Welfare Department of the state government, and is also empanelled with the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan project of the Education Department. It has been approved as a charitable organisation by the Income Tax department and donations to it are eligible for tax deductions under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
